John Speed's 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World' was the first world atlas produced in Britain. It was re-issued in 1631, 1662 and 1676. The maps are well known for their decorative borders. The map of Germany has side borders with figures dressed in local costume according to their status or region. The top border shows vignettes of German cities: Heidelberg, Francfurt am Main, Wien, Prag, Coln, Nurnberg, Strasburg, and Augsburg.
