Wessex , Alfred the Great (871-899) AR Penny, 3rd Coinage (880-899). Two-Line ‘Guthrum’ type, Mercian dies, moneyer Cuthbert. Small cross in inner circle, around EL FRED REX, rev . CVDB ERHT in two lines divided by pellets. 1.23gm. (N 637; S 1066). A beautiful example of this scarce non-portrait penny - silvery grey in appearance, of good metal and with clear legends. There is a strong inner circle on the obverse and no cracks. Alfred entered London in great triumph in 886, at which time he had struck the famous ‘Londonia’ portrait coins, which circulated alongside these more simply designed pennies. Ex. Baldwins, shop ticket c 1920s in AHB’s own hand, priced 25/-.
