In 1921 Sir Hedley Le Bas and friends founded the Society, an exclusive private gentleman's club in London, limited to only sixty members, rising to about a hundred in 1925. Members included Charles Sykes, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII and the Duke of Edinburgh. In 1936 Charles Sykes became the Society's Captain. A Commonwealth Tournament takes place once a year, with golfers travelling from all corners of the globe to compete and enjoy camaraderie amongst peers. The Commonwealth is a major event in any keen golfer's calendar, spanning over three days, two of which are spent on some of Britain's finest courses, with the Commonwealth Dinner held to round off an amazing event. The following is from the Society website 'In 1956 Group Captain Douglas Bader won a Lucifer at the Spring Meeting played at Walton Heath. Bader modified the figure to incorporate a means of striking a match to light his pipe, the figure was jointly purchased many years later by Richard Cunis, and the Society'. The 1952 Lucifer Empire was won by C D Sykes, from Kenya, with a round of 70 at Walton Heath.
