Probably a unique collection of approximately 60 World War Two photographs of various sizes, which show the British Army on the advance in Occupied Europe. Many of the photos are produced on German photographic paper – some with a Dusseldorf photographer’s mark on the back. One shows soldiers outside what may be a French town hall with the Welsh flag, others two men manning a machine gun in a forest; a machine gun position under a ruined building; cheerful German POWs marching with their captors; a regimental goat mascot; graves in a field; a soldier taking cover by some pigs; army vehicles crossing a river by a pontoon; a church with a German helmet on a fence post; soldiers in position overlooking outbuildings waiting to launch an offensive; a tank and a close-up of Field Marshal Montgomery. Some photos have writing on the back in pencil telling us a few of the locations, which appear to include Nymegen Bridge near the Dutch-German border; Grainville (northern France); Tourville (France); Hertogenbosch (Netherlands); Bougy (canton of Evrecy from Bougy (Normandy); Grathem from Wessem Canal; and one, showing six or seven men looking up a hill their weapons, is simply marked ‘first objective reached.’ Please note, a number of the photos have white paper stuck to parts of them – but these could be safely removed with care. A few of the photos are not military-related. The photos are in a varied condition, with the largest being poor (we’ve covered the worst affected area in our first photo).
