The Bexhill-on-Sea Observer dated 9/3/18 reported, Frederick Wickens aged 47, George Withers aged 34 and Samuel Roberts aged 18 pleaded guilty to having caused grievous bodily harm to Sergeant Thomas William Bubb, West Sussex Constabulary, with intent to resist apprehension at West Grinstead on December 30th. Wickens was sentenced to 5 years and Withers 3 years penal servitude and Roberts should undergo 3 years Borstal treatment. His Lordship remarked that the prisoners set upon Sergeant Bubb with 3 heavy poles in such a manner that he might have been killed. Wickens was the instigator, but the 3 men all expressed their desire to kill the sergeant and when they left him they thought he was dead. They also attacked the farmer who went to his assistance.
He was presented the King's Police Medal at Horsham in May 1919, the Chief Constable read the details "when the constable gallantly attempted to arrest some gipsies for stealing hay. He and the farmer who identified them were set about and shockingly treated. P.C. Bubb was badly injured and did not recover for a considerable period. In handing the medal to Sergt Bubb, Lord Leconfield said it was a most gallant act, and he had acquitted himself very creditably."
In 1919 the paper reported the new Sergeant at Horsham was Thomas William Bubb who had been Acting Sergeant for 4 years and had formerly served in the Army in South Africa.
In 1925 he was promoted Inspector and moved from Horsham to Shoreham Station, the paper stating he had served in the Rifle Brigade and joined the Police on leaving the Army. The 1935 Jubilee Medal is confirmed in the paper to Superintendent T.W. Bubb of Shoreham.
The West Sussex Gazette 2/1/47 reported the funeral of ex-Police Superintendent T.W. Bubb. A man of fine courage and tenacity in his job he had nevertheless, a kindly disposition, and always said a good word when possible for an accused person. One of the the out-standing events of his career was when single handed and set upon by 3 caravan dwellers, he effected their arrest and the whole gang were sent to the Assizes. A good sportsman, he took a keen interest in the welfare of his men and also did much to encourage local sport. Ably supported by Mrs Bubb, he did much in raising funds for a police motor ambulance and other charities and initiated the Police Sports Club.
