Southampton Packet Letter. 1848-65 Stampless covers (3), entires (2) and an entire letter, unusually handstamped "PACKET LETTER / SOUTHAMPTON" (P.1) in blue, brown or black (2), or circular "SOUTHAMPTON / PACKET LETTER" datestamp (2, P.2), sent from St Thomas (3), Havana, Santamarta or Mexico, one cover carried on the maiden return voyage of the "Atrato". A scarce and unusual group, most R.M.S.P mail sent bagged to London, these Packet Letter handstamps only used on loose letters posted on board or put on the steamer just prior to sailing. (6).
