John Frederick Lewis RA (1804-1876) - "L'Avocetella Cava" interior of a Spanish church with a figure seated upon a bench, various objects nearby, inscribed with the artists name and the title of the work on an exhibition label verso, pencil watercolour and gouache, heightened with white on tinted paper, 9.25" x 13.5"

* Provenance, with the Fine Art Society, Ltd, 148, New Bond Street, London, W1 May 1961.
* The artist was an English Orientalist painter, specialising in oriental and Mediterranean scenes. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, after his return to to England in 1851 he specialised in highly detailed works showing realistic genre scenes of middle eastern life in more idealised scenes in upper-class Egyptian interiors with little apparent western influence. The artist toured Europe in 1827, the year he began to paint in watercolour, he then travelled in Spain and Morocco between 1832 and 1834. 
* L'Avocetella Cava purchased from the "Home and Interior sale" (No 23463) lot 587, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, London, 5-6 April 2016 for £540:00. Also with Christie's 1855, lot 54, as L'Avocetella Cava. 
* The picture depicts the interior of the chapel in the cave of the Santuario Maria SS. Avocetella in de'Tirreni, near Salermo, Italy, the previous saleroom were grateful to Birony Llewllyn for her assistance in cataloguing the lot in London.
* The work is sold together with the saleroom history also giving details of the medium and paper.
