A FRENCH OR ITALIAN SILVER AND EBONISED WOOD CRUCIFIX, on a bombe-shaped stand with bun feet, 30.5cm high (later fixings).
Provenance: contained in a green Morocco journal - 'History of things belonging to The Honourable Ruth Tennant, daughter of the 1st Lord Crawshaw, 1900' and Great Great aunt of George Buchanan The relevant page inscribed: This crucifix was left to me by Susan, Duchess of Somerset (wife of Algernon, 15th Duke of Somerset). She told me it was reputed to have belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, and she had bought it privately as it all pointed to being perfectly correct. It was going to be bought by a foreigner, but being of historical interest, the owner arranged it should stay in England as the Duchess wished. The shaft of the cross had been broken, and she had it fixed into the new wood base. The V and A Museum told me the central figure was very fine, very old Italian
