Irish Kilkenny Fusilier Militia post 1855 Victorian Officer fur cap grenade. Fine rare silvered flaming grenade, the ball mounted with circlet KILKENNY FUSILIERS; crowned Maid of Erin Harp to centre. Four loops. VGC Raised at Kilkenny 1793, saw active service during the 1798 Irish Rebellion. It fought at the Battles of New Ross and Vinegar Hill. The whole Regiment fought the French at Castlebar. Redesignated Kilkenny Fusilier Militia by 1855, Became 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment on Friday 1st July, 1881. Gordon Cummings Collection.
