A CARVED AND ENGRAVED MOTHER OF PEARL ARMORIAL SHELL PLAQUE. late 19th century, Crest of Layard, carved in deep relief with scrolling acanthus within borders centred a cartouche engraved a fairy resting on convolvulus, the reverse finely carved a huntsman and a dog in a wooded landscape with village beyond. Later label to backboard 'Layard, engraved shell made by a forger serving a 20 year sentence in Fiji where Layard was governor', on blue velvet backboard, shell 30cm x 23cm, 42cm x 34cm overall. *Edgar Leopold Layard CMG FZS MBOU was a British diplomat and naturalist, he served as governor of Fiji from 1874-1875.
