A Chinese Ming blue and white ‘scholars’ jar, guan, Wanli period (1572-1620), painted with scholars in an interior playing weiqi (chess), a stringed instrument and holding a fan with waiting attendants, the shoulder with panels of ‘leiwen’ and ‘wan’ centred by peonies, the lower register lappeted, unglazed base, later pewter mount to neck, 28.5cm high, broken around base and restuck

The neck is bound with a later pewter mount and is likely to be missing a substantial part of the neck, with some evidence of drilled holes just below the mount where they may once have been some rivet repairs. There are few occasional small star cracks to the interior of the jar, not visible on the exterior. The whole of the base has been broken off and messily restuck with some large areas of overpainted filler to the area, please see photos.
