A Qajar Brass Kashkul Beggar's Bowl with Figural Medallions and Calligraphy, 19th Century.
Of almond form with a wide mouth and flat base, this Qajar beggar’s bowl, or kashkul, is cast in brass and finely engraved throughout. The exterior is richly decorated with intricate scrolling vegetal patterns enclosing figural roundels of seated and reclining men in turbans, arranged in mirrored pairs. The main register features a continuous band of Nasta'liq calligraphy above a lattice of arabesques containing warriors, equestrians, and musicians. Additional dense figural and floral scrolls cover the underside of the vessel.
