Note: The Eikon Basilike (Portrait of the King) is an autobiography written by Charles I. It was published on his death in 1649 and became widely circulated despite vigorous attempts to suppress it. The book fostered the image of Charles as a just, peace-loving and pious king and gave him the status of a martyr.
