David Storey: 'Saville', London, Jonathan Cape, 1976, 1st edition, original cloth gilt, dust wrapper. The author's 1976 Booker Prize winning novel, set among a South Yorkshire mining family in the late 1930s. Following the pattern of David Storey’s own early years, Saville is a remarkably honest portrait of the tensions between parents and children, the difficulties of making one’s own way in life, and the social divisions that persist still. David Storey was an English playwright, screenwriter, award-winning novelist and a former professional rugby league player. Storey was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1933, and studied at the Slade School of Art.
