Star Lot: An incredible vintage chocolate box from the offices of the Lord Mayor of Dublin Alderman Alfred Byrne, dating to 1936. Features wonderful decorated lid with vignette to centre surrounded by zoomorphic interlace, with the four province crests to corners. In impeccable condition, has been kept remarkably well. Contains a newspaper clipping inside which outlines the fascinating story behind the chocolate box. With the headline "Lord Mayor goes to the Rescue of Stranded Women Pilgrims," the article explains how a party of Belfast women found themselves stranded at the station after midnight. When Alderman Byrne heard of this, at 2 am he raced to the station and offered them a room for the night in his own home. The pilgrims at first politely refused, so Byrne had a train draw up at the station on his request and presented them each with a box of chocolates before they went on their way. A heartwarming piece of social history.
