TAHITI - FRENCH NAVAL CONCESSION RATE COVER TO FRANCE (+CIVILIAN U.P.U. REGISTERED RATE COVER); Fine 11 July 1870 unpaid stampless env. from Papeete to France with by a sailor serving on the French frigate S.S. Astrée and so was charged at the reduced Naval Concession rate of 11 [decimes = 1f 10c] . It has the 3rd-type TAHITI (OCEANIE)/* PAPEETI * c.d.s. on the front and it was endorsed Frégate LAstrée, Vu Loff[ici]er en Second, Delhaye on the flap. It was carried by ship (probably the A. A. Drebert, Capt. Booth) from Tahiti to San Francisco (23 Aug.) and then overland across the U.S.A. to New York & on to Liverpool & Calais. Plus attractive 11 June 1887 env. registered from "PAPEETE/TAITI" (v fine cds cancels) to Bordeaux with very scarce Dubois 75c Red pair (rounded corner at top left of LH stamp) for the 5-times UPU 25c rate + 25c reg. fee.
