Charles I (1625-1649), AR Shilling 1646, Late Declaration issues, Bridgnorth-on-Severn (?), mm. plumelet over Br on obv. only, Crowned and draped bust left, plume before face, rev. Scroll and three plumes above Declaration, date below, 5.46gm. (Morr. A-3; SCBI Brooker 1128; N 2521; S 3040). Good Very Fine lightly toned, very rare. For many years, up until around 2001, this mint was attributed to ‘Lundy Island’ (as identified on the 100 year old AHB ticket), however as the Royalist forces held Bridgenorth-on-Severn from 28 February 1646 to 26 April 1646, it was suggested by Boon in SCBI (No.33 p.xli) that Bridgenorth-on-Severn was a more likely candidate as the mint for these coins, rather than Lundy, and this is now, by and large, accepted. Ex. Baldwin’s, shop ticket c 1920s in AHB’s own hand, priced at 4/4/-.
