He became a key member of the Caribbean Artist Movement in London, and illustrated many of the books published by John La Rose at New Beacon Books. Derry had his first solo exhibition in 1956 at the Hammersmith Gallery and had further one-man exhibitions in London and Paris. He also exhibited regularly at the Commonwealth Institute from 1957 to 1971. In 1963 he moved with his family from London to Chesterfield, where his wife had been offered better work opportunities. Whilst running his own gallery in Chesterfield, Art Derry continued exhibiting in London, as well as the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield and other local galleries.
