A COLLECTION OF SOLOMON ISLANDS HANDMADE BAGS AND PURSES, 1960S-1970S.
Largest (h 36cm).
Provenance: Private English collection. The owner grew up in the Solomon Islands as her father worked there with the airlines. Her mother M P Carter donated a collection of objects from Pacific islands to The British Museum in 1996. All items were sourced directly from locals and brought through cooperatives, not through tourist markets. Other items such as shells were collected on the beach in the 1970s, mostly in Fiji, but also in many other South Pacific Islands.
