Follower of JMW Turner XX, Oil on board, The Slave Ship , initially called 'Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and Dying - Typhon, Coming on', 38 x 58 1/2''. After reading Thomas Clarkson's ' The History and Abolition of the Slave Trade , Turner painted in this in homage, particularly after learning that in 1781 the Captain of the Slave ship Zong had ordered 133 slaves to be thrown overboard so that insurance payments could be collected Please Note - we do not make reference to the condition of lots within catalogue descriptions.
