A late 1960s/1970s fire opal and diamond brooch/pendant by George Weil, the central octagonal fire opal within a tiered surround of textures and asymmetric starburst motifs applied with clusters of brilliant-cut diamonds, signed 'G Weil' and stamped 'PLAT and '18ct', continental brooch fitting (overall length 6.7cm), suspended from a detachable articulated necklace of graduated 'V' shaped textured links, each applied with two stylised 'X' motifs, stamped '18ct' (approx. 44cm long, combined gross weight 66.0g), the case inscribed Jean Renet, 1 Old Bond Street, London W1.
George Weil (born Vienna 1938) fled to London at the outbreak of the WWII to study painting and sculpture at the St Martin’s School of Art. First producing busts of contemporary politicians and entertainers Weil then set up his jewellery workshop in Hatton Garden where he developed his bold sculptural designs frequently in textured high carat yellow goldwork combined with precious and semi-precious stones. Using the Jean Renet Gallery in London, Weil also exhibited worldwide. In 1979 he closed his London studio moving to Israel where he continued to work as an artist.
