THE DAMAGED STEAMSHIP "ONEIDA" LIMPS BACK TO EUROPE ROUND CAPE HORN UNDER SAIL; 5th May 1857 env. to London per an unscheduled mail on the stricken "Oneida", franked by 6d Diadem (4 wide margins) tied by Sydney barred oval; this letter was carried on the Oneida's second attempt to complete her "inaugural" (!) northwards voyage for the ARMS Co. Her engines could not be repaired in Australia and so she returned to England entirely under sail and via the Cape Horn route (hence the 27th Aug. 1857 London arrival "PAID" c.d.s. on this cover). Rare thus; illustrated in Molnar, vol.1, p.6. Ex Molnar. Sold in our Mar. 2001 sale for £440 Cross Reference: CRASH/WRECK MAIL
