Vernon Ward (1905-1985), a pair of oils, one depicting a maid reading a letter from her Boer War soldier boyfriend (the text of the letter verso) and the other showing the maid writing her reply, oil on board, each 28cms x 24cms.
Provenance: Vernon Ward was a friend of a member of the vendor's extended family and exhibited at his gallery. These genre paintings are based on a letter shown to the artist by a maid who worked for his family. The letter verso is the artist's handwritten copy of the letter shown to him and was the inspiration for the paintings
