A RARE ELIZABETHAN OAK BOX TOP CABINET OF DRAWERS, WEST COUNTRY, EXETER, CIRCA 1580-1600. A rare and unusual hinged, box top cabinet, the lifting lid above a geometric carved frieze flanked by applied lozenge patera, with mock twin drawers beneath, retaining original cabochon appliques divided by vertical mouldings, with twin cabinet doors having applied moulded lozenges opening to reveal an inner compartment with six original fitted drawers, the doors retaining original butterfly hinges and lockplate, 85cm high, 44cm deep and 85cm wide. The cabinet presents with a true craquelure patina. Rarely does any early furniture have this surviving, as it is cleaned off over previous generations in attempts to create a polished surface. Today such untouched condition is prized for its originality.
