CRIMEAN WAR INTEREST: The Crimean Hero Table Cloth, mid 19th century circa 1857, a fine linen damask banqueting cloth woven by D Dewar & Sons to commemorate victory in the Crimean War, the cloth woven with medallions depicting HM Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Lord Raglan, Marshal St Arnaud, Florence Nightingale, Marshal Bosquet, King Victor Emmanuel II, General Sir George Brown, General Alfonso La Marmora, Lord Cardigan, Admiral Bruat, Prince Napoleon, Emperor Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie, William Simpson, Marshal Pelissier, General Sir George de Lacy Evans, General Sir William Williams, Sultan Abdul Medjid, General Omer Pasha, Marshal Canrobert, Field Marshal Colin Campbell, Admiral Sir Algernon Lyons and The Duke of Cambridge, with Royal coats of arms and Turkish Tugrahs, various insignia and emblems, and reserves of martial honours commemorating Sevastopol, Balaklava, Inkerman and Tchernava, approximately 533 cm x 269cm; with twelve conforming napkins, each 88cm x 77cm (13)
NOTE: The Crimean Hero Table Cloth was commissioned by Queen Victoria following the Crimean victory, and was woven in silk and linen. It was widely exhibited at home and abroad. The limited production linen version was available for purchase in London by high ranking officers and great houses among others.
The table cloth and napkins all show small areas of orange marking, and areas of dirt, particularly noticeable on the edges and creases. The are no obvious rips or holes in either the table cloth or any of the napkins.
