A VERY FINE IRISH GEORGE II SOLID SILVER BEER JUG BY JOHN HAMILTON, circa 1730s, of Dublin. The jug is decorated with original engraved detail, along with a crest detail to one side. The pear-shaped body has a fantastic drop-bead design to the beak form spout, and a large scroll shaped handle that floats to the top finishing with a scroll detail. All rests on a raised circular base. The piece has the Irish hallmarks of a crowned harp & the Hibernia figure; the date letter is rubbed. Along with the maker’s mark (rubbed) of John Hamilton. Dimensions: 20 x 19 x 12cm (H X D x W). Total weight: 678grams.
More About the Maker: John Hamilton was a prominent silversmith in Dublin in the 18th century, made a freeman in 1709. He served two periods as Master Warden of the Company of Goldsmiths in Dublin – 1710 & 1714, and between the years of 1714 & 1740 he was elected to the Common Council of the City of Dublin a total of four times. His mark is an IH with a dot between and a crown above.
