Natural History : Scrimshaw Whale Tooth, 19th century.
A large polished sperm whale tooth with carved engravings to either side. One side with image of an American Bald Eagle in flight holding a banner in its beak which reads “E pluribus unum” - a traditional USA motto meaning "Out of many, one"/"One out of many"/"One from many". The other side of the tooth with inscription “Whaling in the Pacific ship Mary 1853” with a depiction of a whale hunt. The sailing ship flying the flag of the United States, and a pair of manned row boats rowing towards the breaching whale, the sailors at the front of each boat wielding harpoons. Whale with raised tail and spouting water.
Excellent condition and patina throughout.
