A FINE AND RARE ELIZABETHAN OAK COFFER, BECKHAM WORKSHOP, SALISBURY, CIRCA 1580-1600. The twin plank moulded lid above a top rail carved with scrolling interlace of flowers and leaves flanked by twin raised face masks. The three arcaded panel divided by four floral Caryatid and Atlanta terms, having two panels carved with tree of life and a scrolled serpent, flanking a centre panel carved with renaissance urn, tulips and carnation flower, all topped by applied carved winged angel heads, the lower rail with dentils and carved scrolling interlace 132cm wide 75cm high Provenance - Purchased from Aubrey and Brenda Burton, in the late 1970s.
This chest has an exceptional colour and surface patination, remaining in an untouched state.
