To compete with Volkswagen's Golf GTI, Ford developed a hot hatch version of the Mark III Escort, the XR3. Initially this featured a tuned version of the 1.6 L CVH engine fitted with a twin-choke Weber carburettor, uprated suspension and numerous cosmetic alterations. It lacked a five-speed transmission and fuel injection. Fuel injection finally arrived in October 1982 thus creating the XR3i. The Escort Mark IV came out in early 1986 and the XR3i was continued, including the Cabriolet version.
The vendor describes this as a lovely one owner example of a very limited edition XR3i Cabriolet in Aqua Blue Metallic with half leather Recaro seats and electric windows . This car was sold by the main Ford dealer in Staines to a lady from Weybridge, Surrey, who used it very sparingly as a car for her holiday home.
The mileage is warranted at 22,200 plus the drive to the Auction, with an extensive pack of service receipts and old MOT,s. The car is only for sale due to the vendors ill health and it has always been garaged. New MOT issued with no advisories and a detailed history file including 17 service stamps and various other bills.
