£750
A French gilt brass petit sonnerie carriage clock, c1875, Payne & Co 165 New Bond Street London, the signature repeated on the backplate, retaining the original platform lever escapement visible through an oval aperture, in silvered, engine turned mask in the top of the gauge case, striking on two coiled wire gongs, with repeat button in the top, 13cm h excluding handle, escapement stamped JS in an octagonal punch, escapement and backplate both stamped 180
Lettering on dial slightly worn, dial not cracked, hands original, one only of the bevelled glass panels with tiny chip in one corner. Movement - going train not working, winding smoothly, striking chain working correctly, as is repeat mechanism. Original escapement complete, not working, in our view because of dried oil but not broken since it does not wobble. Exterior of case much accretion of old dirt and grime, gilding worn or dull, movement reasonably clean, not hitherto offered for sale. One of a number of lots in the sale removed from a local country house and in the same family ownership, quite probably since the 19th century
