the large medallion engraved, obverse, with a portrait of Nelson, after Beechey, engraved KNIGHTS OF TRAFALGAR and the reverse with IN MEMORY OF THE IMMORTAL NELSON, mounted on a naval general service pattern ribbon, London hallmarks for Robert Hennell IV, 1876 -- 2⅜in. (6cm.) diameter
Founded as a naval dining club at the Horseshoe & Star in 1806 by men who had served with Nelson, The Knights of Trafalgar was ordered along the lines of a masonic lodge. In 1826 The Knights opened a book for subscriptions to assist the poor of London in association with the Spitalfields Benevolent Society, which continues today as The Spitalfields Society.
