A GILT-DECORATED TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE 'LOTUS' HEXAGONAL BRUSH POT, JIAQING SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK IN GILT 嘉慶描金六字篆書款 粉彩松石綠地描金番蓮紋六方筆筒 China, 20th Century. The shape of the brush pot is a perfectly proportioned hexagon. It is decorated with an intricate design featuring auspicious and Buddhist emblems, including bats, lotus heads, and peaches, amidst scrolling foliage. Gilt-highlighted decorations are reserved on a turquoise enamel ground. H. 12.8 cm Provenance: Irish private collection. NOTE Similar decoration, Sotheby's London, November 2012, lot 1105 Emperor's Imitative Cloisonné Artistry During the Qing dynasty. The Qianlong Emperor held a strong preference for cloisonné enamel work, and this passion continued into the Jiaqing era. He played a pivotal role in the revival of this intricate art form on a grand scale after a period of neglect during the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor. Cloisonné-imitation pieces, like the present brushpot, were crafted in both enameled porcelain and copper during the Jiaqing period. In these pieces, finely painted golden lines skillfully imitated the wires that traditionally separated the various colors in cloisonné enamel, resulting in pieces that beautifully emulated the style, artistry, and charm of this ancient technique.
