NAPOLEONIC WARS AFTERMATH - HANOVER/G.B. - BRITISH PENSIONERS MAIL CHARGED POSTAGE DUE; 31 Dec. 1868 E with "On Her Britannic Majesty's Service" imprint above the address sent from "HANNOVER" (v. fine cds on the front) to Bodenwerder (apparently regarding the only Waterloo pensioner left in the town, one Chr. Reese), charged "1" and then "2" (silbergroschen) as the free system for these letters had ended when the Hanover Pay Office closed on 30 June 1862. Proof that the pensioner system continued in Hanover more than 50 years after the Battle of Waterloo.Cross Reference: GERMAN STATES, POSTAGE DUE COVERS, MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR
