Louise Abbéma: a scarce French printed fan, relating to the 1904 -1905 Russian/Japanese war, signed at the very top by this painter (1853 – 1927), best known for her portraits. She did however work for Duvelleroy and others (this fan has a Duvelleroy stamp on the verso), note that when she signed her work, she did not put an accent on the e of her surname, as is the case here, monture of stained wood lightly incised and gilded, single paper leaf mounted à l’anglaise, with central Russian eagles, an artist’s palate, and four passages written in support of the Russian people suffering through war, by French writers and poets, being Francois Coppée, José-Maria de Hérédia, Paul Bourget and Jules Lemaître, overall height approx. 28cm
Seen from the verso, the leaf has been restored to support split to the upper folds.
