Launched in 1968, the Series One XJ6 using 2.8 litre and 4.2 litre straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons, which, in the 1960s had expanded to four separate ranges.

The XJ12 version was announced in July 1972, featuring simplified grille treatment, and was powered by a 5.3 litre V12 engine. The car as presented at that time was the world's only mass-produced 12-cylinder four-door car, and, with a top speed "around 140 mph" as the "fastest full four-seater available in the world today". Although it had been the manufacturer's intention from launch that the XJ would take the twelve-cylinder engine, its installation was nonetheless a tight fit, and providing adequate cooling had evidently been a challenge for the engineers designing the installation.

3,235 of these first generation XJ12s were built. A badge-engineered version, the Daimler Double-Six, was introduced in 1972, reviving the Daimler model name of 1926–1938.Only 534 SWB versions were made.

The rare SWB Daimler offered here has been owned by the vendor since May 1985, and there had only been 2 previous owners. There is a letter from the first owner confirming 39,000 miles after 12 years and the Speedo was changed at 48,975. The speedo now shows 32,550 miles.

The car is described by the vendor as being in good original condition and to drive very well. The headlining and Everflex roof have recently been replaced. The engine was rebuilt in 2007 when the rear engine oil seal was replaced.
