An 18th century provincial carved and painted wooden Traverse Board, the circular upper section with an eight point compass star, over a lower board with incised Roman numerals one to fifteen, with further rows of drilled holes, 42cm high
NOTE: The Traverse Board was a ship's watch aide memoire developed in the 17th century. The circular section was used to record the compass bearing on which the ship ran during in each half hour watch. The lower rectangular section was used to record the ship's speed over the same period.
Full length split running from the top of the board, two historic bracing bars applied to the rear of the board.
General wear to the paint work, with minor chips to the rim commensurate with age and use
