AN INTERESTING EDWARD VII VOLUNTEER FORCE LONG SERVICE AWARD TO A SOMME CASULATY OF THE 2ND RHONDDA PALS. An Edward VII Long Service in the Volunteer Force Medal named to Capt C.E. Bond 2nd Norfolk Rgt. On silver top suspension and accompanying miniature and a seated figure of Britannia above 'IX Regt'. Captain, later Honorary Major Charle Edward Bond of the 2nd Volunteers Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. At the outbreak of the First World War he was working as a cashier for the temple Street Swansea branch of the Capital and Counties Bank. General Pearson invited him to become the first officer to enroll in one of the new local Service Battalions, the 13th Battalion, the 2nd Rhondda Pals. Killed in action on the 10th July 1916 leading his men during the Battle of the Somme in the costly attack on the Mametz Wood. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. is son Private Leslie Bond of the East Surrey Regiment was severely wounded during the War.
