An early Finnish folk art Ryijy rug tapestry dated 1722. Tree of Life design with figures, flowers plants and double headed eagle, woven with pile on either side, the wool coloured in plant dyes. 160 x 202 cm
[The Ryijy was in the 18th C created by travelling weavers often commissioned to celebrate a marriage. The bride and groom dancing on the rug during the ceremony and forming part of the brides dowry.
Provenance: Collection of Margaret Bide university lecturer on weaving. Miss Bide travelled to Finland to study the history of weaving in the 1950’s].

Good condition, small repair can not be seen from the front, some wear to pile on the back. size 160 x 202 cm
