Stephen silver Penny, 'Watford' type, obverse die king's bust defaced with a cross. Nottingham mint, uncertain moneyer. S.1284; N.925/3. 1.04g. Blistered by heat(*), broken and repaired. Details better than Fine in places, but overall Fair. Ex. Spink auction 22-3-2016, The Academic Collection of Lord Stewartby: English Coins Part 1, Anglo-Saxon and Norman Coins, lot 376. *Research indicates the coin very likely from the Nottingham Hoard of 1880, found at Rose Yard, Bridlesmith Gate, all of which had evidently been exposed to intense heat according to W.J. Andrew's article in Numismatic Chronicle 1901, p.347. The present coin is a die duplicate of Mack 149ee - see British Numismatic Journal, Volume XXXV, 1966.
