Battle of Trafalgar Interest: A late 18th/early 19th Century silver cased open-face pocket watch, the brass dial with painted enamel chapter wheel, Arabic numerals denoting hours, verge escapement with profusely worked balance cock, fusee movement and squared pillar supports, reportedly belong to French Navy officer Jean-Jaques Magendie who captained the flagship Bucentaure at Trafalgar and was taken as a trophy of war when he was captured, inscribed to case back ‘Capt. Magendie surrendered this watch aboard Bucentaure 21st Oct 1805 James Atcherly Capt. R.M.’, together with A List of the Officers of the Army and Royal Marines on Full, Retired and Half-Pay, 1824, Captain James Atcherly listed on p.355
