French M1866 Chassepot Bayonet & Original Scabbard. Blade spine marked ‘Mre. d'Armes de Chatt.’ and is dated 1874, indicating produced at the French state arms plant Chatellerault in 1874 (possibly 9th October). Matching serial numbers ‘AG 44986’ to crosspiece on left and scabbard body on reverse. Crosspiece on left also stamped with French proof marks and ricasso on right with an ‘S’ inside a circle. These Yataghan sword bayonets were for use on the 11mm M1866 Chassepot needle-fire rifles, so named after their inventor Antoine Alphonse Chassepot. The M1866 also mounts to the 11mm M1874 Gras rifle. Bayonet blade length approx. 22.75” (57.5cm) and overall length (minus scabbard) approx. 22” (55.5cm)
