POLAR FLIGHTS - "VOLO TRANSPOLARE 1926" CACHET & SCARCE LABEL ON ENV.: 1926 env. carried on the 'Norge' franked by Italian 1.25L blue tied by one of two fine "CIAMPINO/8.4.26/(ROMA)" cds's alongside a fine double violet oval "VOLO TRANSPOLARE 1926/EQUIPAGGIO ITALIANO/DIRIGIBILE ''NORGE''/AMUNDSEN-ELLSWORTH-NOBILE" cachet tying a v. fine left marginal "VOLO TRANSPOLARE 1926/AMUNDSEN [airship] NOBILE/ELLSWORTH/POSTA AEREA" scarce semi-official stamp. The Norge was a semi-rigid Italian-built airship that carried out the first verified trip of any kind to the North Pole, an over flight on 12 May 1926.
