A LATE 19TH CENTURY INDIAN TANKARD BY THE FAMOUS SILVERSMITH P. ORR OF MADRAS, possibly Indian silver – no hallmarks, but that would not have been unusual at that time. The tankard is engraved to the front with an inscription; ‘Ubiquy Cup, Presented by, The Officers Royal Artillery, Won by, Mr Osbourne’s Brown Bread, Ridden by Owner, St. Valentine Meeting, Secunderabad 1888’. Condition: in excellent condition, minor dents. Impressed to base with maker’s name. Dimensions: 16.5cm tall, 11cm wide at the top, 16cm wide including handle, base 12.5cm wide. Weighs: 18 troy ounces. More about the maker: P. Orr & Sons was founded by Peter Orr, a watchmaker from Edinburgh. He moved to India around 1848. The firm operated from a premises in Mount Street, in Chennai – then known as Madras. They became very famous silversmiths and the most prominent firm in the then colonial South India.
