£600
A SILVER AND GILT TEA SET BY ROBERT GARRARD II GIFTED FROM THE ATHENEUM CLUB IN PALL MALL TO THE BUTLER AND STEWARD MR JOHN BENNETT IN 1864,
Comprising a silver tea pot, milk pail and sugar bowl.
Total weight: 1360gms
Tea pot 23cm x 18cm
This tea set passed to the present vendor from their mother, Ione Scase (1924-2019); given with the accompanying note and letter in person before she died explaining that it had been presented by the Athenaeum Club to John Bennett on his retirement from the club and it then passed from Bennett to his wife, Christine Scase. Presumably, on her death it passed to her brother, Ione’s father, Reginald “Rex” Scase.
It may be of interest, that Rex worked as an accountant for Canadian Pacific and the Scase family were relocated in Montreal and later Toronto during WW2 together with all their furniture and belongings. The tea service probably crossed the Atlantic twice by ship surviving the risks of war. It appears from the letter that the Athenaeum Club sent to the vendors Grandmother, Mrs RW Scase, she had sought clarification from the Club on the tea set’s history and John Bennett’s position at the Club.
Notable members of the Atheneum Club at the time that this tea set would have been gifted to Mr Bennett include Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, George Frederic Watts and many other academics and artists.
