A Scottish Mauchline ware sycamore-wood Cigar Case, with integral hinged top, foil-lined, and both ends decorated with a repeating penwork foliage pattern. One side bears a transfer coat of arms, granted in 1809 to Catherina, the widow of Lt. Col. Spencer Thomas Vassall of the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot, who died a hero's death at the storming of Monte Video in February 1807. Note also the second crest, a ship, with the motto above in a banderole 'SAEPE PRO REGE SEMPER PRO REPLUBLICA' (Often for the king, always for the Commonwealth), the old Vassall crest. The other side has the transfer monogram initials RJPV within a wreath, for Major General Rawdon John Popham Vassall (1805-1884), the fourth son of Lt. Col Vassall. He married in Edinburgh in 1848, and was living in Ireland during the 1850s and 60s. This case may have been a wedding present
The hinge is in good condition. There is scratching and rubbing to both sides and some of the interior lining material is missing.
