Automobile History. Three lantern plate slides of veteran car registration P274, one shown outside the Old Ship Hotel (R Bacon & Co.) Brighton. * The slides possibly depict the car on "The Emancipation Run" held in 1896 which celebrated the recently passed Locomotives on Highways Act 1896 which liberalised motor vehicle laws in the United Kingdom. The Run from the Metropole Hotel in London to the Metropole Hotel in Brighton had 58 vehicles listed but 25 dropped out before the start. Only 13 or 14 reached Brighton, although it was suggested that one or two cars may have been taken down to Brighton by train before crossing the finishing line. The event, now known as the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, has taken place most years since "The Emancipation Run" was revived in 1927.
