A fine working display model of Cornish Engineer Richard Trevithick’s "Pen-y-daren" steam locomotive of 1804 or possibly the “Gateshead” loco that followed it in 1805 (the first steam powered rail vehicles). The locomotive is fitted with a horizontal cylinder and the piston rod cross-head was connected to the crank-shaft by return connecting rods. 5 inch gauge, 11 inch flywheel, mounted on plinth (28 x 10.5 inch) with travelling case.
