American Civil War, Confederate officer's Savage 1861 Navy, .36 calibre, cap and ball revolver, named for Lt. Ernest Portis, 42nd Alabama Regiment, in fitted oak box, with powder flask.

Provenance: Private collection, Wexford. Whytes auctions 21 May 2022.

Dr. Ernest A. Portis (1843-1903), of Suggsville, Clarke County, Alabama. Prior to the Civil War he attended Southern University. He was mustered into the 42nd Alabama Regiment. Company K, CSA, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded at the battle of Corinth. He was captured by the Union Army in April 1865. He qualified as a doctor in 1882. His sword was sold for US $35,000 at James Julia Auctions, 15 October 2013.
