Isle of Wight postcards and ephemera and a potentially interesting old key. This lot comprises:
1) a key found in the grounds of the George Hotel, Yarmouth in 1968, possibly thought to be one of the keys to The George, originally the mansion of Sir Robert Holmes, Governor of the IoW, from 1669 to 1692. The key has the name Mr Brown on it (see photo).
2) An album with around 150 postcards and photos, a few modern, some older standard-size but mainly 1970s Pamlin print reproductions from the 1970s of much older Isle of Wight views, including some steam and rail interest – with two train tickets of Havant Street to Wootton (see photo).
3) reproductions of four water colours buy John Nixon (1760-1818) from Napoleonic era scenes – Cowes Castle, The Keep at Carisbrooke Castle, Newport, and Upper Ryde in 1808.
4) An album containing various ephemera and approximately 22 reproductions of engravings by Island illustrator George Brannon which were published by the Isle of Wight Country Library, possibly in 1976 – some with the story behind the images.
5) a photo album with items of ephemera and some 17 receipts like the two World War One era examples in our photo.
6) a 1980 reproduction map from an original Ordnance Survey printed from the 19th century, with ‘railways inserted.’
The various items are in mixed condition, some with bumps and bruises, but mainly good.
