WW1 CBE (Military), 1899 QSA 2 clasps Cape Colony, Wittebergen engraved to Maj J.S. Purvis R.E. good very fine or better, mounted in a glass fronted display case. Lt Col John Spottiswoode Purvis's CBE was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd June 1919 for valuable services in connection with the war. He was Mentioned in Lord Roberts despatches for the Boer war dated 4/9/01.
He was commissioned from RMA 28/7/83, promoted Capt 23/11/91, Maj 1/4/00, relinquished temporary rank of Col on ceasing to be employed as Dep Chief Engineer 12/11/18 and granted rank of Col. An April 1927 newspaper copy reported "his death at home at the age of 63. He was a director of Messrs David Allen & Sons, Belfast and London. During his distinguished military career he was at one time stationed at Belfast and it was under his supervision that the Palace Barracks, Holywood were built."
